Depression Awareness Week

Second Annual Event ~ May 6 – May 10

  • May 6 – Dr. Reinecke presenting to students during lunch
  • May 7 – Theater Group: Erasing the Distance
  • May 8 – Dr. Schwartz presenting ADAP to teachers and parents in the evening (co-sponsored by LEAD)
  • May 9 – Erika’s Lighthouse: Student panel and video
  • May 10 – Yoga!!

  • LFHS students presenting to 7th grade – Erika’s Lighthouse
  • CROYA – stress ball activity during lunch
  • Games during wellness
  • Ty Sells – well known speaker, social pressures & resilience

    • Friday, May 10 – Assembly, Lunch & Learn with IYS students
    • PTO, Speak-Up & LEAD providing funding

  • Has commencement during Depression Awareness Week, so no events planned

 

Other Happenings during the week

Julie is meeting with a ministerium group in April and will be encouraging them to do provide some activity that week.

 

Lake Forest Hospital – nothing planned yet

Text-A-Tip

  • Hotline for everything – drunk driving, suicidal, addiction, mental illness, etc.
  • Roll out at the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year
  • Completely anonymous
  • Number to text with code 24/7
    • All church youth groups
    • HS & parents
    • Middle school students
    • Texts answered by certified social workers
      • Working on incentives and protocol development
      • Arlington Heights & Evanston have one, but only during school hours
      • Communication plan – Anne Whipple

How to pay:

  • $2,200 to implement
  • $1,900 annual costs

  • Submitted some grant requests
  • Funding through NWLFH
  • LFHS APT – $1,000
  • LB PTO – $500
  • City & Village – $1,000 each
  • Waiting to hear from foundations
  • Hospital covering Dr. Reinecke for this year, task force will have to pay for his consultation/training services in future

Lake Forest College

March 12 – Community Mental Health Open House

  • About 20 attended
  • Trying to get parents on board
    • OK for children to get help
    • Kids self-advocating
    • Individuals weren’t aware of each other
      • Pro-bono services available
      • Will do it again
      • There is a social workers roundtable at the HS that meets 3 times a year.

 

Coping with Depression – Intense group therapy

  • Lake Forest College faculty agreed to provide to area youth starting next year
  • Working on training the groups with Dr. Reinecke this summer
  • Possibly the group will be offered twice a year
  • 2 hours a week for 15 sessions
  • Charge private providers if they want the summer training. Could provide revenue to the task force

 

Grow Program

  • Referrals from school
  • 3 DPM, 2 LFHS students
  • Financial Problems, depression, anxiety, working with individual and family
  • Once a week – great attendance
  • Working with school social workers
  • Reminder of program after spring break

 

Dr. Reinecke

  • Working with office of development at Northwestern
    • Strong community support to help fund – families and groups
    • Clinical
    • Cognitive Bias Research – Emily Holmes
    • Working with NWLFH on 3/21
      • Talk and training for medical staff on adolescent depression

    • Alcohol/drugs – substance abuse recovery
    • 8 – 12 students
